The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a misguided view of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The actual danger confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this time, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
