Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths that are viable with a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
