A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
